Don’t Worry, I Only FEEL Like I’m Gonna Die

A few days ago…when?  I can’t tell.  Leave me alone.  I was camping in a Cracker Barrel parking lot.  They let you do that: good for business.  All night, revolving on the rotisserie of chills and sweats and pain and chills and sweats…happens sometimes, no one knows or cares why, so I grumbled and ate their lousy breakfast and went on.

A day of elevated mood is always welcome, so I enjoyed that one, the day after the bad night, who knows, who cares.  I do.

Then it hit me like a wall and sent me scurrying to the health food store for homeopathic remedies, Chinese herbs, bee products, healthy meats and vegetables…bargaining, I think they call it?

But no avail, the virus has a foothold, and now it’s the headache, the exhaustion, the total body crushing pain, hyperacusis, desperate thirst, irritability, sweats and chills, and…need I say more?

The Flu.

Is it the flu?  Sure feels like it.

Then I should be on that antiviral…but according to the CDC, there is no flu here.  Really?

It’s the weekend.  Doctors are closed.  The ER?  Fuck a bunch of ER, I’m not going.

It’s the heaviness in my chest that worries me a bit, but…nah, it will pass.

It’s just that I have to get to Chapel Hill on Tuesday.  My baby boy will be defending his Ph.D. dissertation and I must be there.  I must!  So this must pass.

I only feel like I’m dying.  I’m not really.

  2. I had the flu once. Thought I was gonna die, too. But isn’t it great to have an illness that will eventually go away? ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Absolutely. Unfortunately, North Carolina, where I’m currently stuck, had its first flu death of the season this week. Funny thing is I worry more about what would happen to my dog should I end up in the hospital or dead, than I do about myself. She depends on me so completely. Right now she is sleeping on top of my legs, which is 75 pounds worth of warm discomfort, but I can’t bear to wake her. She is so sweet.

  3. Hope you get better and on your way! Sounds like the ugly flu bug! Ant-virals might lessen the symptoms. Better health for you, Laura! ๐Ÿ’› Christine

    • Thanks, Christine! I agree, antivirals would be great. Best taken within 48 hrs of first symptoms and now it’s about 4 days. If I’m not better (or worse) by Monday I’ll call my doc. Hopefully it will have blown over by then!!!

  5. Feel better soon, Dr. Laura. I don’t like reading that you are so ill. Plenty of water and some Golden Seal and Echinacea might help if yore are not already taking. If you have a tub soak in some Epsom salts. That helps sometimes.

    • Thank you….I have the bottle of Yechhinacea (as my son used to call it) and Goldenseal sitting on the counter, but my mouth refuses to take it, and it’s too late for that one anyway…so it’s the Sambucca, Yin Qiao, propolis, ghee….oh, for a tub! I live in my van, so no hot aromatherapy baths๐Ÿ˜•

  6. Oh gosh! I hope your feel better very soon! The flu is the worst sickness ever. I just had a bad head cold, but I’d rather have that than flu ๐Ÿ˜

    • I thought it was going to be a cold, since it actually started with an ear infection/sneezes type of thing, but no such luck…has your head gunk cleared out yet? It’s always such an amazing feeling when the snorks and snots have gone away at last!

      • Oh gosh! I finally got all the gunk out with 3 boxes of tissue!
I looked like Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. Oh well. Usually (fingers crossed) I don’t get these again during the current season.
        Hope you’re getting better!!

  7. Hi,
I have the same worries about my pup. I have a deal with my sister that if I go 24 hrs. without contact then something is likely up. I feel better knowing Blue won’t be trapped in the house for long. Is there anyone who could act as your failsafe? Doc

    • Hey there Doc. That’s a good plan. Nope, I have no one, don’t live no where (homeless). I do try to at least park my van in places that would draw attention if I didn’t move it for a day or so, if I’m not staying in a campground. Relatives aren’t much good if they’re ashamed of you, which mine are. It’s great you and your sister are close.

  10. Laura,
I wonder if there is an app out there that could provide a similar service as my sister does. People with pets, people living alone, etc. If not, I may try to wrap my head around creating one. Right now, I know about as much about computers as needed to turn it on and off. Doc

    • Wow, what a great service that would be! Only problem is, my wolfess is so protective of me that if I were incapacitated they’d have to get the dart gun out before they could pry her off me….
